During the 2001, Dallas/Fort Worth district, Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) church’s Annual Conference, Brother George W. Garrett honored his wife, Lugene Smith Garrett, by initiating a $1,000 Annual Scholarship to Texas College. The scholarship is channeled through Kirkwood Temple CME church where other Kirkwood members and friends are encouraged to enhance the scholarship amount, in future years, by adding to the $2,000 minimum amount. Texas College is a Historically Black liberal arts institution, supported by Christian Methodist Episcopal churches, that provides educational opportunities primarily to African American youth. The “Lugene Garrett Scholarship” will be given annually to Texas College to be awarded to an entering freshman selected by the college. The only stipulations requested by Brother Garrett is that the recipient be a high school graduating senior, accepted by Texas College as a first time, full time, freshman. However, the awarding of the scholarship is the prerogative of the college. 


Below are the qualifications and basic selection rules for this scholarship:

Qualifications:

Must be a member of Kirkwood Temple CME church or a member of the 8th Episcopal District.
Must be a high school graduating senior.
Must be accepted by Texas College as a first time student (freshman).
Selected by the Pastor of Kirkwood Temple CME Church.
Basic selection rules:

Recipient selected by the Pastor based on needs and church and/or 8th Episcopal District participation.
Member of Kirkwood Temple CME church (1st tie breaker)
Student applicant with the highest grade point average (2nd tie breaker).
Best high school attendance record (3rd tie breaker).
Scholarship amount: $1,000 plus.
